Short Excerpt of the Story
...They went home to get their water.
The Donkey carried a big drum.
The Monkey carried a calabash.
Soon the palace was full of water.
But the Tortoise brought no water.
He sat under a tree and watched the others work.
It was evening.
The animals had brought their water.
They were ready to go home.
But the Tortoise quickly stopped them.
“Do not hurry home, my friends,” he said.
“We must pray to god first.
We must thank him for the water.
Maybe he will send rain again.”
The Tortoise added.
“Close your eyes.
Bow your heads.
Do not peek.”
“How will we know when the god answers?” asked the Squirrel.
“He will touch your back softly,” the Tortoise said.
All the animals closed their eyes. While they waited, the Tortoise quietly left.
He took some water.
He carried it to the forest.
